Harper adds equipment,
allies with Opaltone
Harper Corporation of America, the
Charlotte-based manufacturer of
anilox rolls, has acquired a new
Echotech CNC grinder for its
Advanced Surface Technologies Center.
The grinder will allow for tighter
manufacturing tolerances, and will
double the company’s capacity, according
to Lester Carter, plant manager.
“We expect the new grinder to provide
increased accuracy and efficiency,”
he says. The company now
operates three grinders, two in Charlotte
and one in Green Bay, WI.
Harper also announced that it has
joined forces with Opaltone, of Sydney,

PLGA, the Packaging and Label
Gravure Association, has issued a
call for entries in its 2002 “Excellence
in Gravure Printing” awards
competition. The awards will be presented
at the group’s 2002 Annual
Forum, scheduled for late February.
Award categories include cartons;
flexible packaging; sleeves and
tubes; non-PS labels and wraps;
coupons, premiums and booklets; PS
labels; medical and pharmaceutical;
and specialty labels. Awards will be
given for innovation and best of
show.
PLGA’s fifth Marketing and Technical
Conference and Exhibit,
“Gravure 2002 — Counter Currents
in the Packaging & Label Industry,”
will take place February 28 through
March 1, 2002, at the Adam’s Mark
Hotel, Clearwater Beach, FL.
The conference will feature seven
sessions, with presentations from
printers, converters, suppliers,
packaging and label users, and government
agencies.

Australia, to promote the Opaltone
seven-color print processes in the flexographic
industry. The two companies
have signed an agreement confirming
Harper as the sole distributor of Opaltone
for all industries in the Western
Hemisphere, concentrating on flexography
for the first 12 months.
Opaltone’s process expands the
four-color CMYK gamut with the addition
of red, green and blue.
